I’ve had the privilege of visiting Mr. Lovey Forbes at his Whitby Home in North Caicos. I have had the pleasure of seeing his work first hand and even playing Circle Putt Golf with him. He is a man with history that is worth following, a man with knowledge and has the island at heart.
Here is a brief history of this icon of a man. You can read a full article of him in the newest edition of the Times of the Islands Magazine. Click here for full article.
Lovey’s story is that of a natural musician. Born on North Caicos in 1950, he was early-on surrounded by music. His music and writing is all TCI. He developed combina music which is a blend of country, reggae, calypso, rock and roll and gospel.
Many of his lyrics celebrate the beauty, history and culture of the Turks & Caicos. He is known for songs as “Old Conch”, “Bloody Mosquitos” and “Whitby Paradise”.
Lovey Forbes is a model and mentor to other musicians on island, for he has influenced and supported so many other musicians. One obvious example is Correy Forbes, Lovey’s son.
He is also a man of the community, not just through his music talents but when ever he sees a need he simply goes ahead and tackles it. His Whitby home is fronted by a parklike area that he created, maintains and shares freely with locals and tourist alike. It has picnic tables, a grill, hammock, outdoor showers and even some compact mini-golf courses for playing a game he invented called Circle Putt Golf.
Lovey says that everything he does, from writing music to raking casauria needles, is guided by his belief in God. He writes “when the Spirit moves me” plans projects “according to what the Lord shows me” and volunteers his work “To follow my spirit”.
